Peace Community Garden

General Overview

Peace Lutheran Church (PLC) would enter into a five-year cooperative effort with Loaves & Fishes Minnesota (L&F) to develop Outlot A into a Community Garden, providing garden beds for Loaves and Fishes to grow fresh produce for their 20 meal sites throughout the Twin Cities area. In return, Loaves and Fishes would provide a weekly supply of freshly harvested produce for our free meal programs at Peace. The organizations would work cooperatively to raise funds for and promote the shared project in the community for the benefit of both.

Peace’s Responsibilities

PLC would remove debris and excavate to eradicate the poison ivy and prepare the land, as well as provide top soil for 1-acre of raised garden beds and water as necessary for irrigation. The remaining acreage of Outlot A would be seeded with rye grass for the first year to choke out the poison ivy. PLC would provide new signage for both Peace and the Loaves and Fishes garden as funding permits.

The Community Garden Oversight Board would continue to develop the land as a Community Garden and for congregational use after the first year, soliciting grant funding and special gifts to plant trees and native grasses, as well as creating a meditation garden, playing field, and nature path.  Our insurance would cover all Community Garden uses and activities NOT related to the Loaves and Fishes garden.

Loaves and Fishes Responsibilities

L&F would be responsible for all further development, management and costs of their garden beds, including fertilizing, planting, irrigating, weeding, harvesting, cleaning the produce and delivering the produce to their various meal sites.

L&F would be responsible for recruiting, scheduling, training, supervising, and thanking all L&F volunteers working in their garden beds. They would have full liability for and their insurance would cover all L&F visitors, volunteers and staff as well as all activities related to their garden.

L&F would provide the services of their Director of Development to assist Peace in securing grant funding for the on-going Community Garden project.  (For more detailed information, see the Draft Letter of Agreement.)
